Rabbi Laurence H. Rubinstein
Biography

Rabbi Larry Rubinstein was our visiting rabbi from November 30, 2004 to January 16, 2005, in 2006 (April 7-30 and Nov 28-January 31, 2007) and from November 29, 2007 to March 24, 2008.

Larry Rubinstein has a long and distinguished career in the not-for-profit world.  A 1960 graduate of Columbia College, Rubinstein also holds bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.  He was ordained a Rabbi from HUC-JIR in 1965 and served pulpits in Omaha and Philadelphia for 13 years. In 1978 he left the pulpit to become the national director of the Young Leadership Cabinet of UJA.  After four years he became the campaign director of the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia.  In 1987 he became the senior vice president of Brandeis University where he directed the University's first capital campaign ($200M).  He then became the senior vice president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and in 1993 became the executive vice president of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.  In that position, he oversaw fund raising for the Center for Jewish History which currently provides a home for a number of important Jewish archival institutions.  In 1996 he joined the staff of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations as the director of development where he served until June of 2002 when he retired.  He currently serves as a trustee and executive committee member of the Portland Museum of Art and on the Boards of the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Friends of the Kotzschmar organ, and the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.  He is also an overseer of Opera Boston and on the national council of the Glimmerglass Opera Festival.

Robin Rubinstein retired as Senior Missions Manager for United Jewish Commuities in 2003. She currently is on the Board of the Maine Jewish Film Festival and the condominium where the Rubinsteins live in Scarborough, Maine (a suburb of Portland).

The Rubinsteins are active members of Congregation Bet Ha'am in South Portland, and Temple Beth El in Augusta.  They have two married daughters, Mara Tanzman of Waltham, Massachusetts and Eve Papernick also of Waltham.  They have three grandsons, Noah, Zeev and Jesse.
