Cantor Mason was the visiting spiritual leader at Temple Beth Shalom from November 5,2004 to December 5, 2004.
George A. Mason, Associate Member of the American Conference of Cantors, graduated from Cantorial School at the School of Jewish Studies in Chicago in 1964. Since then he has served as Cantor, Hebrew, and Prayerbook teacher for congregations in West Chester, Reading, Lancaster, Pottsville, and Hazelton, Pennsylvania.
From 1968 to 1984, he served Congregation Keneseth Israel of Allentown, Pennsylvania as Cantor. His responsibilities included coordinating and interpreting music with the choir. He also represented the congregation in community activities within the local Jewish community.
During this period and after, he taught Jewish studies in Reading, where he taught 8th through 11th grades. In addition, he initiated, planned, and coordinated Jewish studies programs under the Director of the Jewish Federation of Reading.
Cantor Mason delivered a seminar entitled, “History of Jewish Music,” at the Biennial meeting of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1973.
He has conducted seders in both Pennsylvania and Maryland and has served as High Holy Days cantor at both the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, as well as at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.
