Rabbi Lawrence Jackofsky

Lawrence Jackofsky was born in Albany, New York. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and his Teaching Certificate for Secondary Education from the State University of New York at Albany. He then earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Hebrew Literature from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati where he was ordained in 1969.

After ordination, he served as an Army Chaplain in Fort Hood, Texas, until 1971 when he became Co-Rabbi of Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C. There, he was active in numerous Jewish and secular community organizations. He was also instructor in the Graduate Department of Religion at Catholic University of America. Rabbi Jackofsky has been active with young people in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern and Texas-Oklahoma Regions of the North American Federation of Temple Youth. In 1983 he was elected as an Honored NFTY Life Member.

From June 1973 until April 1974, Rabbi Jackofsky lived in Israel. During that period, He was an Instructor in Jewish Thought Seminar and was a Rabbinic Counselor at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. During and after the Yom Kippur War in 1973, he worked at the Hadassah Hospital with paralyzed patients injured and wounded at the front.

From the summer of 1974 to the summer of 1976, Rabbi Jackofsky was the Rabbi of Temple Beth-El, Charlotte, N.C. In the summer of 1976, Rabbi Jackofsky assumed the positions of Associate Director of the Southwest Council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations(Union for Reform Judaism), and Director of the Greene Family Camp for Living Judaism. In January 1979, he assumed the position of Regional Director.

In addition to his regional responsibilities, Rabbi Jackofsky is the former staff member for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations Small Congregations Committee, and he has served on the faculty of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (Cincinnati Campus) as Visiting Lecturer on Rabbinic Field Work Supervision. In addition, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of REFORM JEWISH magazine, as well as the Board of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Locally, he has actively served for years on various committees within the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, the Executive Board of the Echad Senior Adult Apartments, the Board of the Dallas Jewish Coalition for the Homeless, the Board of The Dallas Jewish Family Service, as Vice President of The Texas Jewish Historical Society, and he was Chairman of the Board of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Chaplaincy.

Currently, he is a member of the Board of the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, and also, he is a Board Member of the Interfaith Council of Thanksgiving Square in Dallas.

He has served as a member of The Board of Governors of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and as a member of The North American Board of The World Union for Progressive Judaism and ARZA.

In July, 2006, he retired after 30 years of service as Regional Director of the Southwest Council of the Union for Reform Judaism. (Formally the Union of American Hebrew Congregations)

Presently, he serves as Interim Regional Director for the Pacific Central West Council of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Rabbi Jackofsky is married to Dr. Ellen Fein Jackofsky. They have one son, Daniel, who is a geologist, and who is married to Dr. Shoshana Nock Jackofsky.
