Heartfelt Thanks! תודה
Dalia Sanchez and I would like to thank all that had contributed the fabulous sweets for rosh Hashanah.
Once again our Break fast was a great success thanks to Pat Rosenberg for doing the shopping (which is a job in itself) & providing the delicious Cheese cake, Morima Mendez (lemon Cake), Rachel Kubaryk (Pineapple), Doris Adorno (Potato Salad), Monica Kratsman (Rice).
I would especially like to acknowledge Gertudis Rivera (Challah, pasta & Fruit Salad), Teresa Hernandez (salad), Blanca Hernandez (Soup), Dalia Sanchez (eggs) for their contributions and helping me with the setting –up (plating) the foods and tables. As usual by helping with the cleanup of the getting rid of the evidence of all the goodies year after year.
Last but not least, I must thank the special Men who had come the rescue for helping with the clearing of the tables and cleaning up “Moises Rivera, Rafael Luciano, Carlos Adorno and Luis Sanchez”. Without them, I would probably still be cleaning up until the next new year.
If I left someone out or I was grumpy with anyone, I am sorry. It happens to the best of chefs…….
May “5772” bring a sweet, healthy and prosperous year for all.
Sincerely,
Sallie

April 2011
I just wanted ask that you pass along warm personal greetings to all our friends at Temple Beth Shalom on this Pesach of 5771. We think of you fondly and often and pray that you all go from strength to greater strength! Marianne and I remember well all of our many visits over my nine years of service (1985-1994) to Temple Beth Shalom in San Juan. Samantha is now a full-time teacher at Central Synagogue in New York City, Jacob is a ballet dancer living in Montreal and pursuing a degree in French Literature at Concordia University, and Zachary graduates from high school in June and will be a student at Sarah Lawrence College in the Fall (where Marianne and I are both graduates, as is your beloved Sue Klau).
Zissen Pesach to each and every one.
B’yididut (In friendship),

Rabbi and all,
It was wonderful to have the opportunity to prepare and serve the food for the reception yesterday. For those of you who don't know, I applied for and received a grant from the organization, VegFund. They give money for serving all-vegan food at events so that people can discover how delicious a vegan spread can be. We received $200 which covered the cost of the food, thanks to Rosalyn's careful shopping. Our crew for preparing the food included Blanca, Rosa, Dalia and Marga. Marga was the one who did all the decorations for the social hall. Most of you remember how nicely she decorated for the Ianelli B'Nai Mitzvahs. One the day of the event my daughter Andrea and Cris plated all the food, put it out and cleaned up. Luis was invaluable with the set- up of the room. So, Rabbi, you are right the cooperation we have is superb. You have already complimented the musicians, but I will add mine.

Thank you so much. We all worked really, REALLY hard - but hard work can be gratifying and a lot of fun! It was awesome and humbling to play the piano with Rosalyn and sing with Adriana. Both are such wonderful musicians and a joy to work with.

A MAGNIFICENT PROGRAM!
With gratitude, I salute the many members of TBSPR who contributed to the enormous success of the April 3 concert. I find it deeply heartening that so many people were so committed and heavily involved in the project:
Roz Ianelli, who researched composers and compiled a well-balanced program of serious and joyous music.
Emily Krasinski, who wrote sensitive notes for the program and presented interesting, informative commentary at the concert.
Adrian Kraiselburd, who brought the audience her powerful soprano voice and magnetic stage presence.
Luis, Rosa, and Angie Ortega-Ianelli, who performed with professional grace rarely observed in people so young.
Sue and Jim Klau, who worked tirelessly to publicize the event, attract sponsors, and print an attractive, informative handout.
Roberta Schiff and Andrea Kaufman, who produced a delicious vegan repast for all the concert goers.
Ana Wagner, Rob Tobin, Pat and Ron Rosenberg, Dalia and Luis Sanchez, and Sally Valcarcel, who worked behind the scenes so that the details of staging came off flawlessly.
The many members of TBS who brought their friends, neighbors, relatives, and work colleagues to the concert.
Our sponsors, who made the event a successful fund-raiser for TBS.
The members of the audience who entered enthusiastically into the sing-along, providing a spirited finale to a marvelous afternoon of music.

Letter received by Rabbi Frank Waldorf on March 24, 2011
Dear Rabbi Waldorf,
One of my pleasures, when I travel, is visiting synagogues and attending services whenever possible.
I have been to services in Cairo, Tunis, Marrakech, Jerusalem, Cape Town, Athens, Rome, Lisbon, Venice, London, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, Rangoon, Katmandu, Buenos Aires, Sydney, and many places in the USA. This is a partial list.
The reason I tell you all of these places is because I want to give a context to my recent visit to Temple Beth Shalom.
Most of the time, when I visit these synagogues, I feel invisible. People may nod hello, but it is rare for anyone to strike up a conversation.
At Beth Shalom, many people introduced themselves to me and engaged me in conversation. Dayenu!
You spotted me as a newcomer and greeted me. Dayenu!
You asked me to read during the service and then called me by name. Dayenu!
I wanted to let you and your congregants know how much I appreciated your welcome and how, as a result, my visit to Beth Shalom will stand out for me.
Many thanks to all of you.
B’shalom,
Jay

The Department of Physics joins Dr. Weisz' wife, Agi, his daughter Ora, and granddaughter in this moment of sorrow. Dr. Weisz received a PhD in Semiconductor Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and held a postdoctoral position at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He served as Senior Scientist at the Puerto Rico Nuclear Center from 1964-1967. In 1967, Dr. Weisz he joined the Department of Physics and the recently created MS Program in Physics as Associate Professor. Immediately after his arrival in our University, Dr. Weisz promoted several important graduate program and experimental research initiatives. He immediately began to build the first semiconductors research laboratory in Puerto Rico, and it soon became the most advanced physics research lab on the island. From that time until his retirement, the UPR-RP Physics Department awarded the largest number of physics MS degrees on the island. In fact, his mentoring of graduate students resulted in two students completing their master's degrees in physics in 1968. The first graduate, Dr. Paul Richardson, was named director of the Research Division of the former US Bureau of Mines. Dr. Weisz' externally funded grants allowed our Institution to obtain state-of-the-art facilities for materials growth and characterization, including the first electron microscopes (SEM and TEN, atomic force and tunneling microscopes (AFM and STM), Auger Spectrometer, Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (SIMS), X-Rays Fluorescence Spectrometer, X-Rays Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS), as well as vacuum and sputtering systems. These facilities made it possible for the Physics Department to benefit from sustained development in the area of materials science and surface science.
In 1978, Dr. Weisz was appointed Chair of the Department of Physics and served in that position for ten years. He recruited or supported the hiring of 5 of the 6 researchers in condensed matter. This group has a high number of publications, receives external funding, and prepares a significant number of graduate students.
Dr. Weisz was the director of the materials science thrust area of the EPSCoR initiative for several years and served as director of the project for the creation of a materials research center funded by NSF in the amount of $1,945,000. He played a significant role in the creation of the Doctoral Program in Chemical Physics and was the coordinator of the program during the first 14 years in which 12 students received their PhD. Dr. Weisz was visiting professor at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerce at Bologna, Italy; at New York University, Brookhaven National Lab and the US Naval Surface Weapons Center. His research at UPR started with seminal work in the area of charge transport inorganic semiconductors. In "Current Injection in Solids," M. A. Lampert and P. Mark from Princeton University have extensively cited his contributions to this field. His interest changed to focus on composite materials and finally evolved to the study of nanostructured semiconductors. He published over 120 articles. Dr. Weisz retired in 1999. Dr. Weisz' 33 years of dedication fundamentally changed the Department of Physics. He advanced experimental research and was instrumental in the Department's developing and offering a Ph.D. program. Condolences may be sent to Agi Weisz at agizvi@bellsouth.net
