Did you know that Temple Beth Shalom has a Book Club that has been meeting for more than fifteen years?
Each year around March, the book list is selected by club participants. Members suggest books that they have either read and enjoyed or have heard about and would like to read. Once an initial list is compiled, Bea gathers reviews on the books from the Internet, and the group votes on the ones they think they would like to read for the year. "Sometimes the blind picks are great and sometimes it's 'Why did we ever read that book?' All in all it's really democratic," she said. The club members initially concentrated on books by and/or about women. After a few years, they agreed they also would like to include a broader range of authors. Each book club member is asked to volunteer to lead the a discussiion of a particular month’s book. Leaders select the book they would like to lead the discussion on, prepare and distribute reading guide questions and information on the author. "After fifteen years, I still love the discussions and the people involved."
The Book Club meets on Sundays at 10:30 am, gathering as a group and encourage discussion in the Temple Social Hall.
For more information about the book club or to join the discussion, contact Bea Tobin via telephone at 787-763-3933 or via the Internet at bea_tobin@yahoo.com.
